BBC, CNN POLLS SHOW STRONG PUBLIC SUPPORT
FOR RESUMPTION OF COMMERCIAL WHALING
(Shimonoseki, Japan) A worldwide BBC poll on the Internet during and after the IWC meeting in Shimonoseki showed strong support for whaling. It puts the lie to anti-whaling groups' claims that "the world " opposes whaling.

The poll, appearing in the middle of the British Broadcasting Company's coverage of the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) annual meeting in Shimonoseki, Japan, asked viewers if whaling should be permitted. A resounding 67 percent of viewers answered "Yes".

The BBC poll confirmed similar findings obtained by CNN, the Cable News Network. The CNN poll on the world-wide Internet showed that 61 percent of viewers believed that commercial whaling should be reintroduced.

The favorable response for commercial whaling came amidst a flood of propaganda from anti-whaling campaigners and a torrent of news reporting that the IWC"s anti-whaling majority dominated the meeting. The anti-whaling members of the IWC passed a series of measures designed to prevent commercial whaling, even in those cases where whale stocks are abundant and the stocks are safeguarded from over -hunting.
