Whale Festival in Ulsan Replays Ancient Whaling in Korea
The 8th Ulsan Whale Festival was held for three days from September 13 in the southeastern city of Ulsan in Korea. The event, under the theme of "Symbiosis--the common dream of men and whales," attracted a large number of visitors with various performances, including reenactment of ancient whaling and sale of whale products and concerts.
One of the main events of the festival was reproduction of whaling operation based on prehistory whaling engraved on rocks. The scene of whalers challenging a large whale model and prayers of thanks to the riches of the sea had much in common with the ancient whaling in Japan.
The Japan Whaling Association took part in the event with other participants from Japan. The JWA booth showed panels on whales, offered sample eating of whale cuisines, and sold books on whales and whaling.
The city of Ulsan hopes to invite the 2005 Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission.
